How to Manage Back-to-School Stress: Tips for Parents and Kids
As summer fades and the school year kicks into 5th gear, many families experience a shift in routine that can bring about feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. Back-to-school stress is a common challenge for both parents and kids, as everyone adjusts to the structure of school schedules, homework, and extracurricular activities. However, with the right strategies, you can manage this transition smoothly!
As a busy family of 5 who attends multiple sporting activities during the week as players and coaches, I need everything to run like a well oiled machine. I’ve put together some of my stress management tips to help your family tackle the school year with confidence!
1. Establish a Consistent Routine
One of the most effective ways to reduce back-to-school stress is by establishing a consistent routine. Knowing what to expect each day creates a sense of stability for both parents and children.
Tips for Creating a Routine:
- Set regular bedtimes and wake-up times, even on weekends, to maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
- Designate specific times for homework, family meals, and downtime, ensuring a balance between schoolwork and relaxation. *Note: The times may vary day to day, but the overall schedule should stay consistent each week (for example, working on home before soccer practice on Monday nights since practice starts at 5:30pm and after cheer practice on Tuesday nights since it is over at 6pm).
- Prepare for the day ahead by organizing clothes, lunches, and backpacks the night before.

2. Focus on Communication
Stress often arises when kids feel overwhelmed or uncertain about their schoolwork, schedules, or social interactions. Encourage open communication with your children to help them navigate these challenges.
How to Support Communication:
- Ask open-ended questions about their day to help them express concerns or feelings.
- Validate their emotions and offer solutions for managing stress, like breaking large tasks into smaller steps.
- Create a “worry jar” where kids can write down their stressors and work through them together with you during a designated family time. *Note: I learned about this strategy and others in the book What To Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid’s Guide to Overcoming Anxiety, you can grab your own copy on Amazon here.
3. Teach Time Management Skills
For kids, juggling schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and social commitments can be overwhelming. Teaching time management skills can help them feel more in control of their schedule.
Simple Time Management Techniques:
- Use a family calendar to track important dates, such as school projects, tests, and events.
- Encourage kids to prioritize tasks and break big assignments into smaller, manageable tasks.
- Set up designated “study zones” at home where kids can focus on schoolwork without distractions.

4. Incorporate Relaxation and Breaks
Back-to-school season can be hectic, but it’s crucial to incorporate relaxation and downtime into your family’s schedule. Both parents and kids need time to recharge.
Relaxation Ideas:
- Schedule daily breaks during homework sessions for outdoor play, quiet reading, or a quick snack.
- Introduce mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or short family yoga sessions, to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
- Limit screen time during the evening hours to promote better sleep and relaxation.
5. Prioritize Healthy Habits
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle plays a huge role in reducing back-to-school stress. When your family feels physically well, they’re better equipped to manage emotional stress.
Healthy Habits for the School Year:
- Ensure your kids get enough sleep each night (9-11 hours for school-aged children).
- Pack nutritious lunches and snacks that fuel their bodies and minds for a successful school day. Need lunch ideas? Our Ultimate Back-to-School Survival Guide is full of healthy and delicious options!
- Encourage physical activity after school, whether it’s a family walk, a team sport, or backyard playtime.
6. Manage Your Own Stress
Remember that kids often mirror their parents’ stress levels. If you’re feeling frazzled, your children are likely to pick up on it. Prioritizing self-care is not only essential for you, but it also sets a positive example for your children.
Self-Care Tips for Parents:
- Set aside 10-15 minutes of quiet time for yourself each day—whether it’s enjoying a cup of coffee, reading a book, or simply sitting in silence.
- Talk to other parents and share your experiences—it helps to know you’re not alone in navigating back-to-school stress!
- Delegate tasks when possible, whether it’s meal prep, laundry, or driving the kids to their after-school activities. Note* This is where carpool groups are essential!
7. Set Realistic Expectations
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by trying to do it all, but perfection isn’t necessary. Set realistic expectations for yourself and your family. Let go of the pressure to be perfect, and remember that it’s okay to have off days!
Managing back-to-school stress takes some planning, but with the right tools and mindset, you can set your family up for a smooth and successful school year. By prioritizing communication, routines, and self-care, you’ll find that both you and your kids can navigate the school year with less stress and more confidence.
