Taking The Best Care Of Your Hearing

Your hearing is one of your most important senses. Your ears pick up valuable information and help your brain to make sense of the world around you. Without your hearing, you might not be able to hear a car coming up behind you as you walk. You learn about impending dangers through your ability to hear.

But it also enhances your experience of the world around you too. You’ll hear sounds that you enjoy such as music and people’s voices, and it allows you to participate easier in conversations.

But do you take your hearing for granted?

It is essential that you take good care of your hearing. In this article, we’ll talk through some of the ways that you can do that.

Avoiding Exposure To Loud Noises in The Workplace

If you work in an environment where there are lots of loud noises, such as a nightclub, building site, or a factory, then this prolonged exposure to noise could bring about hearing loss or cause tinnitus

If you work in an environment such as this, take measures to protect your hearing. Wear ear protectors such as earmuffs or earplugs. You should also take regular breaks from working in noisy areas.

Don’t Listen To Music At Too High A Volume

If you enjoy music, it is essential that you don’t listen at too high a volume. Continually listening to your music too loud, particularly through headphones, could damage your hearing.

If you are wearing headphones, consider getting noise-canceling headphones. These will block out the sounds outside of the headphones so that the music that you are listening to does not need to compete with anything.

Many modern devices will have warnings that tell you when you reach the end of the safe listening levels. Don’t listen with the volume too high. If your device has a warning in place, keep your volume below this level.

Get Your Hearing Tested

If you find that you miss words that people say to you and you have to continually ask them to repeat themselves for you, then it might be a sign that you are experiencing hearing loss.

Make an appointment to see an audiologist and have your hearing tested.

When you go for your hearing test you can expect the audiologist to ask you some questions about your general health and lifestyle. This will give them an indication of the cause of your hearing loss. Hearing loss could be caused by an infection, stress, exposure to loud noises, or there could be another reason.

During the hearing test, the audiologist will play you a series of sounds. You will need to indicate which ones you can hear. This will let them know to what extent you are experiencing hearing loss.

From these tests, your audiologist may be able to recommend a course of action. This could be having excess wax cleared from your ears, visiting your doctor for an ear infection, or having a hearing aid fitted.
