Christmas is a time for embracing traditions with your family. We are so lucky to have many incredible traditions with our family from baking cookies to decorating our Christmas tree! This year we decided to partner with the Christmas Tree Promotion Board and keep it real with our Christmas tree tradition, by not only having a real tree in our home, but actually going to cut the tree ourselves! It was an event that will surely be one of our favorites, not only of this holiday season, but of all time.

We packed up the kids and ventured out on a “mini” road trip to cut down our very own Christmas Tree a local tree farm. My kids love going on road trips and seeing how they’re usually traveling over ten hours in the car to see family, a two-hour ride was exactly what they needed for their road trip fix. We could barely contain our excitement once we arrived to the tree farm.

At the tree farm, we learned all about the process for growing a Christmas Tree. You may not believe it, but it takes about 6-10 years to grow a Christmas Tree! Opting to fill your Christmas with a real tree does more than exude a nostalgic evergreen scent in your home. It also helps the environment! Real Christmas trees cannot only be recycled but they are carbon neutral, meaning they absorb as much carbon dioxide during growth as they emit when disposed. Most importantly, for every tree cut, 1-3 more are planted in its place!

After learning about the various kinds of trees available at the farm, my family and I decided to venture to find the perfect tree. We looked at different characteristics like color, texture, height, and smell. I told my boys (as the Christmas Tree Farmer told us) to listen to the tree that calls out for us to bring it home. After carefully being poked in the ear by numerous trees and learning that trees don’t actually call out, we found the one! We had a blast wandering through row after row of trees and by the time we found the perfect tree, it felt as if we tracked through all ten acres of the farm.

Our day was filled with so many memories and more laughter than I could have imagined! Here are just a few of the many things we’ll remember from our first trip cutting down our own Christmas tree:

  • sitting by the fire and enjoying hot chocolate
  • soaking in the breathtaking views
  • picking out the perfect tree for our family
  • having the tree almost fall on our 2-1/2 year old (dad caught it)
  • watching my 6-year-old drag the tree up to checkout
  • taking selfies on the tractor ride that chauffeured us directly to our car!

The ride home was just as much fun as we talked about our new family tradition! My 6-year-old loved being able to carefully carry the saw and actually help my husband in cutting the tree. My little guy is officially on the countdown when he will be old enough to help with cutting the tree.
